EuroMACHS: bringing Heritage, Technology and Creativity together

The EuroMACHS’ programme is the result of a partnership between the Universities of Coimbra (Portugal), Cologne (Germany), Graz (Austria), Salento (Italy) and Turku (Finland). This Master’s programme combines knowledge of European cultural heritage with current development in information and communications technology (ICT).

Hands-on experience is central to the program together with a high level of carefully chosen generic competencies in the area of project management, organization, technical and communication skills. Mobility is a key feature of the programme as staff travels between universities in the first semester and students study at partner universities in the second. In the third and fourth semesters students return to their home universities to apply the acquired skills and develop project and thesis work.

The Master’s programme brings together diverse and high quality academic traditions and experiences responding to the challenges of the European Higher Education Area.

The Master’s also focuses on heritage, European history, and cultural diversity by providing an environment where new ways of harvesting and disseminating historical and heritage information can be discovered.  Its strong emphasis on content production is an essential factor in the success of the information and knowledge defined in the Lisbon strategy.

“As technology is advancing and more technology based products are required, there is a  need for more quality content than is being generated causing a ´content gap´ and creating a demand for this new type of professional” says Joaquim Carvalho, Program Coordinator of Euromachs.

The Programme is one of the selected programmes featured in the brochure “Creativity and Innovation: Best practices from EU programmes" in 2009.
